Description

Dinwoody Plate 7

This is the complete panel of the preceding figure (Plate 6). The following is my own interpretation. At the right we see the same woman who has given birth to twins. This multiple birth was considered a disgrace to any Indian woman, hence it was recorded. The circle to the extreme right indicates the "moon house" where she was confined for a month after the birth of her children. This was the custom for all women. Above the circle appears a figure which may be a member of her family. TO the left of the mother appears the figure of the mid-wife who assisted her. The three smaller figures appear to the extreme left. These two are members of her family and they have their backs turns, since it a disgrace for them for the women to have given birth to the twins.
