Description
This notebook contains several articles written and edited by Alfred J. Mokler. These pieces include historical events, people, and places of Wyoming. Not all articles are digitized and are available for in-person viewing. Not digitized articles include: "Chapel of the Transfiguration," "History of Menor's Ferry," and "Shoshone Cavern National Monument."
"Magnificent Mountain Peaks of Wyoming" details several of Wyoming's mountains with historical name selections made in 1934 and a list of mountain peaks accompanied by their elevations.
"Fremont's First Expedition to Wyoming" is an account of the first exploratory military expedition to Wyoming led by Lieutenant John C. Fremont in 1842. This also contains a short but comprehensive biography of John C. Fremont with a handwritten draft from Alfred J. Mokler.
"Origins of The Indian" is Mokler's account of Native American origins and culture, including tribal practices, migration and settlement, and notable events. This also includes a bulletin from the Department of The Interior Office of Indian Affairs of the "Indian Wars and Local Disturbances in the United States from 1782-1898" written in 1921.
"Sanity and Enthusiasm in the Western Oil Empire" was an article detailing Wyoming's oil and was written by Charles A. Selden and published in the New York Times in January of 1920.
"Reclaiming the "Great American Desert"" is a brief historical account of emigrant migration, pioneers, their settlements along the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, and their changes made to the Wyoming desert.
"Robert Stuart's Expedition in 1812" is an account of Robert Stuart's expedition from Astoria to Saint Louis in 1812. This includes their travels, experiences, and hardships endured around Wyoming and the routes established along the way.
"Dr. Marcus Whitman's Noble Sacrifice" details Dr. Marcus Whitman's work with Native Americans and his contributions to western frontier development from the late 1830s to the early 1840s, including his death and thoughts surrounding the matter.
"History of The Settlement of Wyoming" describes Wyoming's origins and history with details of explorers who paved the way for the March of Emigration, including Lewis and Clark.
