FOREVORD
SUBJECT:

Letter of Welcome for Entertain
ers Visiting Pacific Area

Welcome to the Pacific Area and to the
Pacific Command.
This area is a wide expanse stretching
from Hawai^ through the small and large
Pacific Islands to Korea.
The civiliza
tion is primarily oriental in most of the
Pacific and different from our western
type, but you will find the people cour
teous, dignified, likeable and friendly.
During your free time, you will find many
things to interest you from entertainment
to sightseeing and shopping.

While in this area, it is of utmost im
portance that you consider carefully the
impression which you are creating in the
minds of the people.
In a very real sense
they regard each American as a direct rep
resentative of the United States and the
American way of life.
By exercising due
care and caution in your public conduct
and appearance, you can perform an impor
tant service to your country by winning
the respect, friendship and increasing con
fidence of the people in these lands.

1

Your services to help maintain the
morale of the troops throughout the Pa
cific Command area are greatly apprecia
ted.
Your presence in our far-flung area
of defense contributes materially to the
over-all well-being of American military n
personnel.

PACIFIC COMMAND

tfri 1

'15'0 1

■
.
- jilf
The Pacific Command is a unified com-^
mand established by the Department of
Defense.
As such, it is the highest lev
el of U.S. military command in the Pacif
ic Area.
Besides purely military respon
sibilities, it also carries out responsi
bilities of an international political
nature such as implementing U.S. Military
Aid Progiiams in foreign countries and by
participating in treaty organizations such
as the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization.
To assist the Commander in Chief, Pacific
Command, there are elements of the three
Services called component commands.
These
are the Commander in Chief, U.S. Army Pa
cific; Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet;
and the Commander in Chief, Pacific Air
Forces.
Because of complexity of problems
stemming from the diversity and number of
foreign nations within the Pacific Command
Area, subordinate joint commands have been
established on an area basis.
Additional
ly, in each country receiving military aid,
there is a Military Assistance Advisory
Group, the chief of which, in the military
chain of command, is under the Commander in
Chief, Pacific Command.
In summary, the
Pacific Command is the largest U. S. mili
tary command, area-wise, ever organized to
carry out the responsibility of assisting
in the furthering of U.S. National Policy.

HAWAII. a group of tropical isles with
volcanic mountains and sandy beaches, is
world famous for sunshine and song.
Hula
dancers, pineapple and cane plantations
and the history of the Hawaiian royal fam
ily will interest you.
A U.S. Territory
desiring statehood, Hawaii is popularly
called ’’Paradise of the Pacific.”
JOHNSTON ISLAWD. a U.S. possession now
on stand-by status, is approximately 700
miles west of Hawaii.
Only a mile long,
it is a coral island with no native population, and only a small number of Air
Force personnel.

j

I
'

KWATALEIN. one of the Marshall Islands,
once belonged to Japan, but after World
War II, it passed to U.S. trusteeship.
Copra is the chief product.

‘

ENIWETOK, is an atoll in the Pacific
used for testing various operational acti
vities.
•

GUAM, was originally settled by the
Spanish, who occupied the island until it
was ceded to the United States at the end
of the Spanish-American War.
It is an im
portant refueling stop for the Military
Air Transport Service.
Today there are Air
Force and Naval installations on the island.

MIDWAY, is a refueling stop for trans
pacific planes.
It is the home of the
gooney bird, an awkward humorous bird which
loves airplanes.

First settled by the Spanish, the
Philippine Islands passed to the con
trol of the United States as a result
of the Spanish-American War. On 4 July
1956, the islands became a Republic.
Ramon M.agsaysay, their recent president,
who was killed in an airplane crash in
early 1957, was a dynamic leader who
charted the course of the new republic
into an important ally of the Western
World.
Military installations of all
Services are located in the Philippines.

TAIWAN, better known to Americans as
Formosa, is the main bastion of Free
China in her fight against communism and
is of strategic importance to democratic
nations.
At the end of the Sino-Japanese
War the island was ceded to Japan, who
maintained strict control over the colony
until 1945.
Taiwan became the seat of
Free China’s government in 1949 when the
Chinese National Government withdrew from
the mainland.
Taipei, the capital city,
is located on the northern part of the is
land.
TWO JIMA and OKINAWA are remembered as
the scene of bloody World War II campaigns
to secure bases for the planned Japanese
invastion.
Because of their strategic lo
cation, they are now important U.S. bases
guarding the Pacific perimeter.
JAPAN. is reportedly Asia’s most pro
gressive country and has made rapid strides
toward democracy since her defeat in World
War II and the U.S. occupation.
An island
chain stretching approximately 800 miles,
Japan presents a country in transition from
an ancient civilization to a modern one be
coming more and more Western.

5

KOREA, a mountainous peninsula pro
jecting toward Japan, was the location of
a bitter war in 1959 which divided the
country into two areas, North and South
Korea.
South Korea today is a democratic,
nation, rapidly rebuilding a new modern
way of life on top of one of the oldest
civilizations in the world.

CLOTHING & DRESS

"io P;, L „ . -.

'————■

ilO

In general, the climate of the smaller
Pacific Islands is almost the same all
year round with temperatures averaging 75°
to 90°.
Cotton is the preferred material
even for underwear.
Rainwear is a neces
sary item and swimming suits are recommend
ed.
A sweater, stole or men’s lightweight
jacket is often required in the evenings.
Japan, Korea and Taiwan have seasonal
changes chid reouire winter clothing as well
as summer clothing.

For women, the importance of appropriate
dress while traveling in the Pacific Area
cannot be overemphasized.
Foreign nation
als judge America by the few Americans who
happen to visit their country.
Conserva
tive dress will build respect for the Amer
ican way of life but extreme low-cut dresses
will embarrass our country and probably
the wearer.
Tight sweaters are definitely
in bad taste.
Shorts should be worn only in
ouarters and when participating in active
sports activities.
Slacks should be worn
only on the plane during transit.
For men, Bermuda shorts are acceptable
on the various islands during the daytime,
but not after 1800.
In Hawaii "aloha”
shirts (brightly-colored sports shirts worn
outside the trousers) are socially accept
able, everywhere, except at special formal
parties and certain clubs.
At Kwajalein,
Eniwetok, Iwo Jima, Midway, and Johnston Is
land, informal wear, including "aloha"
7

shirts, is acceptable, but at Okinawa and
Guam, coats and ties are required in Of
ficers and NCO clubs after six o^clock.
At Clark AB in the Philippines, sport
shirts and slacks are authorized at the Of
ficers Club until 1900, but after 1900 a
long sleeved white shirt and tie is manda
tory.
Sport coats and suits are optional.
Sport shirts are acceptable after six o’
clock in Taiwan.
Coats and ties must be
worn after six o’clock in Officers and NCO
clubs in Japan and Korea.

REGULATIONS WHICH APPLY TO YOU

’
* i’'-

JU The Uniform Code of Military Justice
provides that all persons accompanying
-an armed force in the field are subject
to military law.
Any violation of mili
tary law may subject you to trial by court
martial.
If any question arises as to
whether you may or may not do something,
consult your military escort before acting.
’’Off Limits” areas outside military in
stallations are so designated because they
arp disease ridden and are a definite
threat to your health.
Being under mili
tary law, you will be subject to discip
linary action if you are apprehended in
one of these areas.
Do not ask questions about the size or
movements of units.
This is security in
formation and should not be discussed
with anyone including yourselves.
It can
not possibly assist you in the accomplish
ment of your mission; therefore, you have
no need for it.

Many of you may wish to take pictures
on your trip, and have brought along cam
eras and film for this purpose.
Do not
take pictures in restricted areas. We
suggest that you have your film developed
only in Japan or the United States.

billets AO SHOW ARRANGEMENTS*'
----------------; o’fWS
The Special Services Officers of the
commands where you will perform are res
ponsible for providing you with the nec
essary billets, messing facilities,
transportation and safety.
These officers
are trained personnel who, in most cases,
have taken care of many entertainment
units.
They will try to foresee your
needs and desires, but in some cases you
may require things they have not provided.
If this happens, ask, through your manager
and escort, for the items you desire.
If
it is possible to acquire what you need,
the Special Services Officer or”his repre
sentative will gladly obtain it f.or you.
Remember the Special Services Officer has
many duties and responsibilities of which
entertainment is only one.
In order to
avoid confusion and duplication of requests,
the show manager should be the spokesman
for the personnel in the troupe.

Your quarters will vary from installa
tion to installation.
This is because all
units do not have available the materials
with which to construct permanent type
housing.
Due to these limited housing
facilities it will not always be possible
to billet married couples together.
Re
member that you will be billeted with
people who are working normal office hours
and you should be quiet, respectful guests
in their homes.
Stage facilities are usually improvised.
Construction and location of stage facili
ties will vary from unit to unit. Show
10

equipment will always be guarded but
your valuables are your responsibility.
Employ extreme caution about the secu
rity of valuables, particularly in Ko
rea.
Be constantly on the alert against
thievery.
