In January 1949, one of the worst recorded blizzards in southeastern Wyoming buried many areas in and between Casper, Douglas, Laramie, and Cheyenne in 10-12 feet of snow. Large numbers of wild and stock animals were lost and hundreds of people were stranded in their homes, businesses, and cars. Several people died or were injured from exposure or accidents in the below freezing temperatures. The Casper Army Air Base launched operations "Operation Hay-lift" and "Pitchfork" in an effort to use planes and other military vehicles to deliver 300 tons of hay and fodder to the remaining starving animals during the following six weeks. The Casper Army Air Base along with several other out-of-state military forces also assisted in digging out roads with the overburdened highway department crews, as well as contributing to relief and evacuation efforts. The U.S. Army Air Base in Casper, Wyoming opened in 1942 to train bomber crews.

<text>Photograph of a convoy led by an Army bulldozer (not pictured) hauling food, fuel, and hay down Brooks Road. The trip took two days out and two days back.

<text>Collection of 29 photographs taken during one of President Harry S. Truman's visit to Wyoming. He made three trips to Wyoming in total. Truman had made a speech in front of the governor's mansion in Cheyenne following a parade from the railroad depot on June 6th, 1948 . He visited again on May 9th, 1950, but this time started his visit in Casper and was met off the train with a brass band. During this visit, he went to the opening dedication of the completed Kortes Dam. He visited again in July of 1953 as a former president, meeting with Governor Clifford Joy Rogers. The visit included meeting with the 131st Light Bombardment Wing. Missouri Air National Guard during their summer encampment at Casper, Wyoming. Many of the photographs in this series are undated and/or unlabeled, but likely date to Truman's visits in either 1948 or 1950.
