The event was first conceived by local Casper Mountain resident Neal Forsling in the 1920s for her family and friends to celebrate the end of winter at her home with stories and treats. The event continued and expanded, drawing many locals to Forsling's property on Casper Mountain each year. Forsling would tell stories during the event, a task that was later taken on by her daughter Mary Martin and then Rebecca Weaver Hunt. The event sparked controversy among local Christian groups for its supposed encouragement of witchcraft and pagan-inspired theme, events, and stories.
