The name Temple was suggested by hrs. H. /i. who received a ten-dollar gold piece for her suggestion. The second movie house was the Bell theater which opened in deptember, 1909, and which occupied the old town hall building on Center street. James Ingram and Joe Darrin were the original proprietors of the bell, but buy Trevett soon became a partner in the theater. W. ri. (rtoy) Sample took possession of the theater. In 1910, Brice of admission to the dell was 15 cents, and all changes of program were announced by a sign placed in one of the theater's front windows. fire gutted the theater on the night of January 6, 1912. Following the demise of the bell theater, ftr. bample conceived plans for a new theater to be constructed next to the old tovm hall. The building, designed by James Rhodes and built by Charles Galusha and ft. Ferguson, opened on -ugust 22, 1912. hr. bample named his new theater the Iris, but the name was changed to the Hex in 1925. In 1957j the Hex stopped showing notion pictures, and the building was demolished during the summer of 1962: exactly half a century after it was built. Two other motion picture houses were opened in Casper oefore 1920. These theaters were the Hub, midway between Center and Wolcott streets on becond street, and the Lyric on Center street, by Hay barnes and George Kropp in a** arch, 19Ih. ihe ^ub was started Tt was a popular theater for children because it showed serial pictures such as "The Perils of Pauline �Picture nouses/2 The nub went out of business in 19?3. nenry P. brennan in January, 1?17. The nyric theater was opened by i*ir. -Orennan would advertise his pictures sometimes by standing in front to the theater and talking through a megaphonet a tactic that often drew audiences from tne bars across the street. The Tyric changed its name to the Wyoming theater in 1922, and eventually went out of business in 1929. The fourth motion picture house to appear in Casper was the America theater, being opened on October 13, 1920, the America holds the distinction of being the oldest theater presently in operation in Casper. The next theater in Casper was the Columbia. Originally called the Pavilion, the theater opened in the spring of 1921, and became known as the Columbia in ■September of that year. It was located on ’.-jest ^^irst street, one block down from the Penning Hotel. The Columoia was a vaudeville theater which featured motion pictures as an added attraction each evening. In 1928, the theater closed down and became a bowling alley in the 1930’s. The itialto theater was opened by "enry F. Brennan in 1922. c-xperiencing financial difficulties at the Hialto, Mr. Brennan turned the theater over to Edvard J. Hchulte who, in 1929, consolidated all of Casper's theaters still in existence: the Hialto, the America and the Hex. The Hialto has the honor of having run the first talking picture to oe viewed in Casper — "State Street Hadie," shown in August, 1928. The marks left by the rubbing of a pine tree branch me be clearly seen in the upper right hand corner. One turtle was completely erased. Vandals have also removed one of these small turtles from the shield. (See AGE by E. B. Description An account of the resource Plate 11 from the Castle Garden collection A complex panel of shields and possibly drums. The shield to the extreme left is a chromopetroglyph. Four heads complete the design and a green band was painted across each face. Below it is the figure of a buffalo. The circle to the right of the yard stick contains the figures of two prong horn antelopes. To the right may be seen a man with a spear. The circle to the right of this figure represents two birds, sage or grouse. Above this a shield represents what appears to be the sun symbols. To the right of this is another shield with many inner circles and two feathers at the top right. Below this may be seen a circle containing two weasels, usual sign of a medicine man. To the right of this, the four quarters of the moon is represented. Below this, a shield containing six bear claws radiating from a central circle. The last shield is complex with zig-zag, lightning like lines of a symbolic nature. This is probably the best group of shields to be seen at Castle Gardens. They are beginning to erode badly and the uppermost circle is practically gone. The paint on the one circle is also hard to trace. Description An account of the resource Plate 12 from the Castle Garden collection An Anthropomorphic Chromopetroglyph of a warrior on a shield. He is depicted holding two feathered spears. The sandstone is badly cracked, but the surface was smooth before the Indian artists engraved this figure. The colors of the figure are the following: the feathers are white; the face is green and featureless; the neck is purplish-red; the shoulders are orange-yellow; the upper garment is green and the skirt is purlish-red. This is one of the finest figures although the colors are faded. The two zig-zag lines on the shoulders are like those on the Great Turtle. The diameter of the circle is about 16 3/4 inches across. The central shield has a design resembling a bird. The last shield shows a medicine man wearing a head-dress and with a weasel on each side of the figure. Below these shields is a complex panel, of which several figures resemble hide stretchers and an arrowshaft may be recognized below the third shield. The sandstone here is eroded and peeling. Description An account of the resource Plate 14 from the Castle Garden collection A panel depicting four shields and an Anthropomorphic figure. The upper left hand shield is a simple design of an oblong bar with a circle on each side. Beside it appears the figure of a man. The upper right hand shield bears two turtles, similar to the others at Castle Gardens, and a snake-like figure. It is natural to suppose that the shield had four turtles in each quarter before erosion removed the right two turtles. The two lower shields have designs of a symbolic nature and are too worn to for recohnition. Note how visitors have defaced the sandstone. Description An account of the resource Plate 15 from the Castle Garden collection A complex but badly eroded panel of shields and tool-grooves. Many of these designs are barely recognizable. The two shields to the right are the best preserved. The extreme right hand shield has a bird for a central design, and several tool-grooves have been deeply cut. Above this shield appears a full-face view of a man with head-dress and below the shield the legs are shown. Actually it is a man behind the shield. The shield to the left of this figure is the same thing-a man behind it and also carrying a lance with feathered end. Tool-grooves and other designs are upon it. The designs below this symbol are quite similar to the rain symbols of the Southwest.
