Hejoined the Colorado Symphony in the 2015/2016 Season as Associate Conductor-a position he held for four years. For three years prior. Dragon held the tnauguraf position of AssistantConductorwith theWestAustralian Symphony - - Orchestra, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch. Dragon has a versatile portfolio ranging from live-to-picture performances including Nightmare Before Christmas, Toy Story and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, a wide variety of collaborations with artists such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Cynthia Erivo and Joshua Bell, to standard and contempora^ orchestral repertoire such as Danny Elfman's Violin Concerto, Eleven Eleven; all areas of which he has become highly sought after. She currently studies flute with Dr. Nicole Riner and composition with Dr. Nicolas Chuaqui at the University of Wyoming, and has previously studied with Dr. Anne Guzzo. Her musical compositions are often inspired by stories, and she enjoys exploring fantastical worlds through abstract sound, as well as writing about animal life or natural phenomena. Flight ofthe Golden Bird (2023) is dedicated to the Wyoming Symphony. The Wyoming prairie shimmers with life. Plants rustle in the strong winds, and birds sing brightly. The western meadowlark takes to wing, but the strong winds make it difficult. She is knocked to and fro, a leaf in a powerful breeze, but her little body was made to fly, and fly she does, coasting on the wind that was hindering her seconds before. The rolling hills are golden brown, and the grass billowing in the wind appears co gleam like the scales of fish in a far away ocean. But none of these things are on her mind for dark storm clouds that were far off on the horizon are now shadowing the prairie, The wind howls, and rain starts to fall. She is knocked askew, and struggles to maintain direction. "Thunder crashes and flares of lightning illuminate the dark clouds. Spiraling down to the ground, the meadowlark dives for cover from the storm. She finds her­ self in a mass of tangled branches, some underbrush. Suddenly the storm feels much quieter, despite the plant swaying in the wind. She is alone. She sings out, listening for other bird calls. She can hear them respond, but she cannot see their source, and she wonders - are these the calls of my friends or the wind whistling? And yet despite the isolation, the uncertainty, and the storm raging, the prairie is beautiful. There is the gray of the sky, the sound of rain hitting the branches of the underbrush, and the occasional rays of sun cutting through the gloomy sky. Eventually, the warmth of the sun overpowers the waning storm and she feels the light on her face, her wings, and in her eyes - the glare almost too much. The wind may be gusting with immense force, and these may be the same winds that blew in the storm, but they are also the same winds that blew the storm away. Not one to ever give up, the western meadowlark takes to wing once more, her song echoing all around as she rides through wind and sun. �Justin Bartels joined the Colorado Symphony as Principal Trumpet in July 2008 and has been on faculty at the University of Colorado since 2012. Prior to his arrival in Colorado, Justin held Principal Trumpet positions with the Columbus Symphony in Ohio (2007-2008), Central City Opera (2006-2012), and Augusta Symphony (2006-2007). He was previously a fellow with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida (2003-2006), Mr. Bartels has appeared as a soloist with numerous groups and ensembles. In 2016, he was a featured soloist at the International Trumpet Guild conference in Anaheim, CA performing Alexander Arutunians Concerto for Trumpet. Most recently, Mr. Bartels was a featured soloist with the Cheyenne Symphony in Wyoming in the summer of 2021. In addition to his role as Principal Trumpet in Colorado, he has performed as Guest Principal with the New York City Ballet, St. Louis Symphony, and San Francisco Symphony. Additionally, over the past twenty years, Mr. Bartels has performed with Alabama Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, and Virginia Symphony. Mr. Bartels is a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music(BM, 2003) where he studied with Marie Speziale, Ed Cord and John Rommel. The relationship between student and teacher is always noteworthy, but the relationship between student and teacher for musicians is particularly so. Among performers, the teacher inspires and establishes a process of conceptualizing music and executing on that concept. Composition teachers will establish a starting point for the student, and the student's natural gifts, along with exposure to other music, will develop a unique style. The relationship between teacher and student is perhaps best illustrated among composers in the instruction Beethoven received from Haydn. While half of Beethoven's symphonies 1,2, 4, and 8 - have a distinct feel of Haydn's influence, the other symphonies have cemented Beethoven's legacy as a revolutionary. The years of Beethoven's study roughly coincide with the composition of Haydn's trumpet concerto, and Beethoven's extension of compositional technique is demonstrated in his Sixth Symphony a little more than a decade later. Haydn wrote his trumpet concerto in 1796 for Anton Weldinger, although the work was not performed until 1800. Weldinger was an innovator of a keyed trumpet, in theory offering a greater variety of pitches than its natural trumpet counterpart, but the instrument was limited in success, and trumpet players were a generation away from the valves that would provide greater range and flexibility. The concerto is in the three distinct movements typical of concertos of the classical period. The first movement, in the variant of sonata allegro form we hear in concertos, states two contrasting themes in the orchestra, followed by statements in the solo instrument. The opening theme is appropriately fanfare-like for a work for trumpet. As the musical ideas are developed, the interplay between the orchestra and the soloist becomes more pronounced. The movement concludes with a cadenza which both demonstrates the soloist's virtuosity and weaves together the themes of the movement. The second movement is less intricate musically and provides a more lyrical respite from the musical rigors of the first movement. The third movement. �"Rondo," is by its very structure easy on the ear, integrating multiple short musical ideas to form a light, cohesive conclusion to the work. the canvas of music, the longer symphony and nature themes easily invoke the same reaction as, say, a Bierstadt painting of the American West. A dozen years separate the Haydn and Beethoven works but one would be forgiven for assuming it was a much larger gap. A few elements of Beethoven's divergence from his teacher are apparent upon the most casual observation, such as the length of the symphony, the centering of the symphony along a common "nature" theme, and the titling of the movements along the theme. The symphony was composed roughly concurrently with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, and we can hear traces of one work in the other, such as the transition without break from one movement to another and the expansion of the orchestra in the later movements. The music is evocative of the indicated scenes, a carefree life in the countryside opening the work, happy gatherings of country folk, a terrible storm, and then the rejoicing after the storm that all is, once again, well. This depiction of nature in all its expansiveness is a hallmark of Romanticism in the visual arts, and that Beethoven's images are so vivid within the symphony, this depiction of nature maps well to the visual arts. If time is Romanticism in music and its counterpart in the visual arts have their similarities, but they differ in one key respect, the role that time plays in the artistic experience. A painting may be experienced in a timeframe established by the beholder, while a piece of music must be experienced in the timeframe established by the composer. The composer must establish cohesion in real-time, and the techniques for creating a single musical unit that unfolds over an hour are where Beethoven's mastery reveals itself. Each movement of the symphony has a limited number of musical ideas, yet in developing those ideas through fragmentation, inversion, juxtaposition, and the other tools available to the composer, we experience the enormity of the natural scene as Beethoven intends. We are brought back into the scene with musical depictions of birds in the woodwinds and thunder in the basses. Cohesion is built using both the traditional elements of form to establish familiarity with the musical material and with depictions of the familiar. �MfGAN KARLS CONCERTMASTER Megan Karls makes her home in Montana, where she performs as co-concertmaster of the Great Falls Symphony and with their resident artists, the Cascade Quartet. She serves frequently as guest concertmaster for the Bozeman and Billings Symphonies, Intermountain Opera Company, and String Orchestra of the Rockies, and performs regularly with the Boise Philharmonic and Spokane Symphony. Megan is the first woman in classical music to be awarded the Montana Arts Council's Artist Innovation Award, for her debut video album entitled "Decommissioned: Solo Violin in Cold War Relics," filmed live in decommissioned military structures across Montana. She has recently appeared as soloist with the Milwaukee Philharmonic and Great Falls Symphony, and as a chamber musician, Megan has been a guest artist across the nation, including Oberlin Conservatory, Lawrence University, Northern Illinois University, Roundtop, and the Society for Electroacoustic Music in the US. She spends her summers with the Britt Music Festival, McCall Music Festival, Assisi Performing Arts in Italy, and has traveled to El Salvador as a Teaching Artist and toured Bulgaria in 2021 with Symphony Vratsa. Megan maintains a beloved studio of young violinists and in 2015 received the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award on behalf of the Great Falls Symphony and Public Schools collaborative partnership.
