In January 1949, one of the worst recorded blizzards in southeastern Wyoming buried many areas in and between Casper, Douglas, Laramie, and Cheyenne in 10-12 feet of snow. Large numbers of wild and stock animals were lost and hundreds of people were stranded in their homes, businesses, and cars. Several people died or were injured from exposure or accidents in the below freezing temperatures. The Casper Army Air Base launched operations "Operation Hay-lift" and "Pitchfork" in an effort to use planes and other military vehicles to deliver 300 tons of hay and fodder to the remaining starving animals during the following six weeks. The Casper Army Air Base along with several other out-of-state military forces also assisted in digging out roads with the overburdened highway department crews, as well as contributing to relief and evacuation efforts. The U.S. Army Air Base in Casper, Wyoming opened in 1942 to train bomber crews.

The U.S. Army Air Base in Casper, Wyoming opened in 1942 to train bomber crews.

you^ll never forget perhaps a part of it is things we remember and
times it is hard to forget new buildings and mud and ditches new
teachers in the classroom new faces new plans new ideas suddenly old
and used and accustomed unexpectedly
this is our college we remember only minutes that were unimpor
tant and never the important things to hold on to lectures to listen
to classes to go to people to meet problems to suffer papers
to grind out all over countless cups of coffee to drink and cigarettes
to smoke
but here it is with small jokes and big jokes and someone’s new car
and fads and games and promises never kept the struggle with
themes and times and places and plato or maybe t.s. eliot or adam
smith or freud or aristotle or dewey or perhaps nothing like that at all

and the constant battle with grades the almost failures and the com
plete ones the right thing to do and the right place to go architects’
plans and the date that fell through and the games that were lost and
what else was here but these things
and we came here new to it all and pushed our colors and our ways
and our ideas and ourselves into the pattern sometimes with ela
tion or cheers or grief or worry and the pattern emerged and it
was the same after all but different than the years before and hard
to hold on to to show someone as it changed all the time even as we
touched it in our hands like the strings of the world it changed

this is the college that is ours the college that is yet to come whose
face we do not know with its difficulties and its inspirations to its past
and its present and its unknown future

BIG SEASON FOR THE T-BIRDS
With the most impressive season in college history
behind them, the Thunderbirds hung up their shoes
with mixed feelings on being left out of tournament
play. A player had been declared ineligible after the
final game which left the T-Birds deadlocked for
first place in the Northern Division of the Empire
Conference. Although conference games were for
feited, the coaches, players, and spectators remember
the season as ending with
