The scale of this graph is one inch equals one foot. The zig-zag line indicates the present floor-level, this data being necessary in order to determine how far down the petroglyphs extended. The broken line to the right represents the entrance to the cave or crevice, as the northwest wall is not included in the cave proper. The main petroglyph on the northwest wall represents an elk (see Plate 4). A buffalo track is superimposed below the eye of the elk, also the arrowshaft passing across the nose. Above the leg, note the deep tool-groove. Symbolic figures appear to the left. The northeast wall belongs to the cave proper. This panel extends for twenty-eight feet in length and to a depth of six feet from the present floor-level, with an extension of one and a half feet above. Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context SpecColl 01.1941.01_PoNEW Description An account of the resource This collection consists of reports on and descriptions of petroglyphs and pictographs created during the New Deal archaeology that happened across Wyoming during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Ted C. Sowers oversaw these reports as Supervisor for the Archaeological Project of the Works Project Administration. Danny N. Walker, PhD, RPA, Wyoming State Archaeologists' Office, writes in a poster presented at the Society for American Archaeology's 76th Annual Meeting, "As with many other WPA projects, the survey closed with the advent of World War II, but provided a basis for future archaeological research" (2011). Description An account of the resource Northeast Wyoming Plate 3, taken at Medicine Creek Cave. A poor photograph of the anthropomorphic female figure at the Medicine Creek Cave. The narrowness of the cave (3 & 1/2) ft.) would not permit a good picture. However the champ-leve style can clearly be seen. The "horns" belong to a figure which had been incised before this present one. An arrowshaft or lance pierces the woman's body and the reason for her death and the recording of this petroglyph can only be surmised. Since the female sign is so very obvious, it is possible she was deliberately killed, as adultery was not tolerated among the Plains Indians. Again, she may have been a prominent woman among her people and her death was mourned and recorded here. The designs upon the body may suggest decoration upon her costume.
