Description

The following transcription of Demorest's annotations was selected and transcribed by Casper College student and Archives staff member Grace MacPherson in January of 2024.

SONNET 133
Has “eye” become symbol by now of E’s gov.? Maybe eye = ēē = E. = Eliz – I also? Iago
33 = age of Ess.? Yes; he dies at 33
“To give comfort” is (I believe) to aid a rebel
Line 2
My friend and me: Southampton + Essex
Line 7
Of him, myself, and thee: triples
Line 8
Crossed: transmutation of Acteon? Or Blount + Essex

SONNET 134
Essex calls South his other self in letter [illegible] before Irel.
84–Death of Alencon
(It is Eliz. speaking to Time about Essex)
Perhaps his “confession” gets South. Freedom!
Line 11: Perhaps Essex pleading that S is implicated only because of his influence; better theory here on South regretting Essex– Perhaps regret that Essex dies + South in prison – while Sh the voice of the same love, goes free (but not wholly)
