OPERATING FIFTEEN ROTARY RIGS IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN AREA �The Athletic Staff Swede Erickson NJCAA President Athletic Director Few in the national basketball circles have not heard of Swede Erickson. Whether it be as a coach, a friend, or through the United States Olympic Committee, most have worked with Oscar Erickson. He is a devoted student of the game, and two years ago finished his outstanding 29-year junior college coaching career with a record of 638 wins and 234 losses (a .730 winning percentage). He is the third winningest coach in NJCAA history. It seemed only fitting, then, that after his coaching career, he would become President of the NJCAA. Swede is now the Director of the Casper College Foundation, and also serves as athletic director at CC. During the past two years, he was instrumental in the building of a new 4,000-square foot Fitness-Wellness Center at CC. He also watched the Lady T-Birds take their first trip to the national basketball tournament. Ask him his goal, and it remains the same as it was in 1958: he wants Casper College to wear a national championship ring. Erickson’s term as president of the NJCAA lasts another year. He says his goals include a careful review of eligibility rules, and the establishment of a juco letter of intent. Currently, athletes are not required to sign a binding letter. Erickson says the NJCAA is also working on stablizing starting dates, numbers of games and scholarships for every sport. “We hope to get back to term eligibility, and continue a long-range planning strategy effort,’’ he adds. Erickson is an avid outdoorsman. He has a wife, Artie, and two sons Kent and Brent. Jean Wheatley Associate Athletic Director Jean Wheatley has helped to build one of the finest physical education departments in the region during her 20 years at Casper College. She is also primarily responsible for instigating women’s athletics among junior colleges in Wyoming. Jean’s teams first began competition in 1972. The CC tennis coach from 1977-1984, her teams won four Region IX championships. Under her guidance as Associate Athletic Director, the CC women’s teams have won three conference championships in the last six years. Last year, Jean became director of the Fitness/Wellness Center on campus. She is dedicated to teaching good health and physical fitness to her students. Besides being an outstanding teacher, Jean Is an outstanding tennis player, as the many state championship trophies on her mantle will attest. During his first season as a head coach, Pat's Thunderbirds went 17-15, captured a share of the Wyoming Conference crown, and finished among the top five defenses in the nation. Few had given his team a chance at .500, particularly when the record stood 3-8 in December. There were victories over Laramie County, Northwest Wyoming (on the road) and Northeastern along the way. The foundation and the philosophy were etched. He is ready for step number two, which is a return to Hutchinson, Kansas and the national tournament. Before arriving at Casper, Pat was an assistant coach at Eastern Montana, Northern Arizona, and the University of Idaho. A native of Buffalo, Pat played at Northwest CC, and later at Eastern Montana. Abe Steward Women’s Basketball Coach Abe Steward had a goal two years ago: to elevate Lady T-Bird basketball to the national spotlight. It didn’t take long. In 1987, Steward and his ladies visited Senatobia, Mississippi and the national tournament, after posting a 27-5 record, and winning the Region IX championship by a whopping 30 points. In two seasons, Steward’s teams have won 52 and lost just 12. Steward came to Casper College in 1970, and went on to become an All-America player under Swede Erickson. He played at Jacksonville, and later with the Carolina Cougars of the ABA. After his stint there, he played and coached in Brazil, before Swede lured him “home” as his assistant. Abe has a wife, Arlene, and a son Trei. Mary Schrad Volleyball Coach In two seasons at Casper College, Coach Mary Schrad has made her mark on Region IX. Her teams have challenged for conference and regional honors while posting a fourth place finish at Region IX in '85 and a second place finish in sub-region in ’86. A successful volleyball and basketball coach at Lyman High School, Mary's volleyball teams went 52-13, including two regional championships and a consolation winner at the state tournament. In basketball, Mary’s teams posted a 53-12 record including two regional championships and a state championship. Mary also earned Coach-of-the-Year and was named the Shrine South All-Star Basketball Coach in 1985. Mary is a graduate of Briar Cliff College (Iowa) where she was a standout in both volleyball and basketball. She played professional basketball after college for the Iowa Cornets of the now defunct Women’s Basketball League and spent three years playing basketball In the European Women’s Professional League in Austria and Germany. W. J. Wragge Men’s Assistant Coach A devoted pupil, W.J. has spent the past two seasons assisting the men's basketball program—under Swede Erickson and now under Pat Rafferty. His dedication to Casper College and to the T-Birds is unmatched. He studies the game, and gives generously of his time to assure success for the red and white. His goal is to become a college coach. A native of Sheridan, W.J. is a CC alum, and earned his degree from the University of Wyoming. Seniors - be sure to purchase your senior card and enjoy additional savings at each meal. �CC unveils state-of-art Fitness Center It is the latest approach to “total fitness.” And Casper College unveiled it to the public a year ago. The former agriculture building-automotive shop has become a 4,600 square foot Fitness-Wellness Center, featuring a Universal Aerobic Super Circuit exercise system. The concept of the system is simple, according to the center’s director, Jean Wheatley. Wheatley, who has taught physical education at the college for the past 20 years, said the super circuit does more than provide stronger muscles. “We’re not talking just strength and power,” she said. “Participants alternate between weight equipment and aerobic equipment for a complete cardio vascular workout. That’s why it is considered a total fitness program.” The renovation of the building and the purchase of equipment was made possible through funds donated by the Casper College Foundation. Swede Erickson, the Director of the Foundation, said the facility has been needed for a long time. “It’s a need for the students,” he said. “It is also a place where people can develop good cardio-vascular health. This will help our physical education cirriculum, what with the emphasis in our society on total health.” He sees the Fitness-Wellness Center as a step toward a student recreation facility on campus. Wheatley said the center is open to students, faculty and the public. The only requirement is enrollment in PE 201-Fitness and Wellness. Before using the equipment, Wheatley says she is requiring participants to go through an orientation. Wheatley says Casper College took a page out of the book of an Illinois junior college. Carl Sandberg College in Galesburg, Illinois put a fitness center together using Universal’s “super circuit” system, and it was met with enthusiasm by students and the public. Joliet Junior College did the same, and physical education enrollment there doubled. More students from outside the physical education interests got involved, Wheatley said. Weight rooms have traditionally been dark and uninviting, she added. One of the goals of CC officials was to provide a comfortable place for recreational workouts with a pleasant atmosphere. The system itself has machines designed to test respiratory efficiency, strength, endurance and flexibility. Participants warm up first on “aerobicycles,” then move to the first of many weight training stations to perform repetitions for 30 seconds. A recorded voice instructs the participant to move on to the next station, which is another exercise bike. The entire workout, then, alternates between lifting and aerobic exercise. Computers register heart rate, body Students, faculty and the public receive a complete cardio-vascular workout at Casper College’s state-of-the-art Fitness Center. Wheatley says one of the benefits of the system is that it appeals to all age groups. The weight stations, for instance, focus on each part of the body. One is designed specifically for the lower back. Ron Wicks, the assistant director of the facility, says adults can take the course as many times as they wish. Students can earn up to four credits In Fitness and Wellness 1 through 4. “We're really encouraging students to make this a part of their college experience,” Wicks said. Today the tradition of academic excellence continues. Casper College is located in Casper, Wyoming—the state’s largest city and the hub of the state. The school is also known for its agriculture, music and fine arts, nursing and physical sciences. The campus, which overlooks the city from the south, is distinctive with its beautiful terrace landscapes and fine architecture. Now 26 buildings dot the 175-acre campus. The latest addition to the physical plant is the Gertrude Krampert Theatre. This year, the theatre and music departments will play to capacity audiences. While the basketball team has earned national acclaim, Casper College is also known for its varsity rodeo program, which has won four national championships. An official ticket outlet for Thunderbird basketball. 1 �RISING STARS Rafferty’s second goal: trip to Nationals Coach Pat Rafferty says he will look back on the 1986-87 season with a lot of fond memories. For one thing, it was his first year as a head coach. For another, his Casper College basketball team accomplished far more than anyone thought it could, winning 17 ball games, capturing a share of the Wyoming Community College Conference crown, and finishing among the top five in the nation in scoring defense. Not bad. But for Rafferty, it was merely a fondation; a learning experience. He’s anxious to put that experience to work. "Last year was a learning experience,” Rafferty said. "I learned a lot about Region IX, and about this program, and I think I have a better understanding of what it takes. "I hope we established an identity and a philosophy. There were really a number of things that allowed us to improve in February and March. One was finding the right combination. Another was that our kids learned how to play hard for extended periods of time. Losing a few kids (at Christmas) may have been a blessing.” Last year's team, 17-15 following postseason play, was just 3-8 at Christmas break. But the late-season streak was credited to defense, which gave up just 63.7 points per game. Opponents’ field goal shooting percentage was 43.1 percent. Rafferty thinks this year’s team can be better because he has better athletes. The squad is led by sophomore Emanuel Cross, a preseason All-American candidate from Chicago. Cross was the fifth-leading scorer in the region last year (18.9 per game), and is already among CC’s all-time leaders in that category. Add to that five rebounds per game, 75 percent free throw shooting, and his ball handling ability, and Rafferty says Cross has the potential to be one of the best guards in the country. Rafferty also welcomes back Todd Betton (6-5, Compton. California) and Sterling Schroefel (6-0, Casper). Betton scored 10.5 points per game and led last year's team with 7.7 rebounds per contest. Schroefel split time with Tyrone Taylor at the point guard slot, and played in all 32 games. “Those three should help the new kids learn,” Rafferty said. “They know what to expect. Also, they compliment each other; Sterling with his effort and energy, and Todd should help the front line. 'E' will lead just by example.” Rafferty has a talented group of newcomers, as evidenced by an outstanding preseason. Each one has demonstrated an ability which can help carry this Thunderbird team down the stretch. Speaking of stretch, Shawn “Stretch” Jamison (6-7, Los Angeles) is leading the team in rebounding with 6.6 per game. He is also the team’s second-leading scorer with 11 per outing. Another outstanding prospect is Archie Tolliver, a 6-6 “Train” from Chicago. Tolliver had 21 points and 12 rebounds at Powell in December. Other freshmen include Michael Hudson (6-5, Los Angeles), Joel “J.T.” Thomas (5-9, Chicago) and Melvin Nunn (6-3, Chicago). Those three all played quality minutes during the preseason. Robbie Jackson, the 6-0 guard from Casper, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in one outing. Another newcomer who spent time in the starting lineup is Kendall Schmidt (6-4, Englewood, CO). Doug Lane (6-5, Powell), Shon Schroefel (5-11 Sophomore), Roger Werin (Sweden) and David DuBay (Rochester, MN) add quality depth to the team. Rafferty said he recruited these newcomers with some priorities in mind. “As you look at last year, we needed to be a better shooting team (for the year, CC was 45.2 percent from the field and 62.8 percent on free throws). Also, we needed better athletes on the front line. “We were not a great zone team last year, and I hope to have that flexibility this year. Potentially, we could be better than last year defensively because we have better size and quickness. Because we are a better shooting team, that should make people play us more honestly.” In looking back at November and December, the above has been the case. Casper is second in Region IX in defense (allowing just 42 percent shooting to the opponent). Also, the T-Birds are shooting 49 percent from the floor. While the 10-2 start is the best since the Tony Martin-Eric Davis team of 1980-81, the T-Birds could easily have been unscathed going into the holidays. In the losses to Eastern Utah and Ricks, Casper had leads of double digits against both, before losing in the closing moments. Rafferty admits that he is proud of the start, but emphasizes how far this team has to go. “I'm not satisfied offensively, and I think we can get better defensively,” he said. If this club can find "chemistry” and maturity by February, there is a good chance it will contend for the Region IX championship. Local fans would like that, since regionals are right here in their own back yard. It exceeded everyone’s expectations but Abe Steward’s. Coach Abe knew all along that his 1986-87 basketball team would win the region. He knew they would go to Nationals. They not only did both, but they established some wonderful milestones along the way ... like 27 wins, most in the school’s history, and a first-ever Region IX championship. Sophomore guard Serbrina Andrews was named All-America, the only Lady T-Bird ever to enjoy that honor. And three players, Andrews, Krisser Kiever and Sheryl Schroefel, made the all-tournament squad. (Despite Casper's dominance of the region, only Andrews made the all-region team.) Steward took the incredible ride in stride. Perhaps it was the determination from the year before. His sophomores had suffered a disastrous one-point loss to Central Wyoming College the year before in the championship game. That made coach and players all the more set on a trip to Mississippi. The season itself started innocently enough. After five games, CC had hardly proven a thing; the record said 3-2, with losses to Utah Tech and Sheridan College. Later, a loss at Miles City made the record 5-3. But after that, the Lady T-Birds took flight. They would lose just one more game in the next 22 outings. There was a 53-51 setback at Nebraska Western, but the next loss would not come until the second game of the national tournament. If there were any doubts at the Region IX tournament who the top team was, the Lady T-Birds erased them. They absolutely decimated opponents. They beat Mid-Plains 73-50, Miles City 64-40, and Western Wyoming in the championship 76-28. The average victory margin: 33 points. They had earned their trip to Senatobia, Miss. That was more than enough for their fans, but this team took one more step. In their opener, the Lady T-Birds ousted Cowley County, Kan. 72-60 before bowing out to the eventual national champion. Northeast Mississippi, 88-57. In the women’s tournament, there is no third game for a second-round loser. “I knew that team would win the region,” Steward reflects. “Sheryl, Serbrina and Krisser were my first recruits. We thought we could get there the first year, but we were a bit outmanned. I knew they had time to develop.” There were, of course, some other important contributors. Shelley Anderson, a 6-3 center who sat out the previous season to earn a starting spot, and Karen Brinton were the sophomores. Brinton battled knee problems all season, but was considered the quiet hero by Steward. Suzette Haller, Kim Near, Kelly Galloway, Jeanette Scheitel and Laura Eisenbraun were the freshmen who benefitted from their teammate’s large leads. Eisenbraun had 8 points in the championship game, and Haller had 6. Three players off that team are playing elsewhere this year. Andrews and Schroefel, who combined for more than 30 points and 10 assists per game, became a package deal for College of the Ozarks in Missouri. Kiever will play at Eastern New Mexico. Steward says he has seen enough to know that Casper can compete on a national level. He won a game at nationals with a roster that had only two out-of-state players, something he points to proudly. He credits Wyoming’s high school girls’ athletic programs forthat. “My goal is to take this program as far as it will go, to become a national contender,” he says. “That was the same goal I had as a player here, to get to nationals, and then to have the chance to win it.” Newcomers Vicki Williams and Julie Gustafson have big shoes to fill. To come so far and to lose by so little always hurts. But Schrad and her Lady T-Bird volleyball players can take some consolation. After all, they did finish second in the regional tournament—the best finish ever for Casper College—and they did lose to a team that ultimately finished fourth In the nation. And they won more matches than any other Lady T-Bird team had. The Lady T-Birds finished the 1987 season at 33-9-1. Their final loss came to Northwest CC in the championship match of the Region IX tournament. That, after the red and white had battled through the losers' bracket with four straight wins to make the finals. "I haven't gotten over it,” Schrad admits. “But I feel better realizing what (NWCC) did at Nationals. We played great In the tournament. We rose to all occasions, and we did it the hard way. Losing to a team that finished fourth in the nation eases the pain a little.” It was indeed an outstanding season for Casper College. With only five losses during the regular season, CC defeated every team on its schedule. One of those victories came over NWCC in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Schrad said most of the credit goes to her sophomores: Jodi Leithead of Ten Sleep; Jeanette Schietel, Pine Bluffs; Wendy Fischer, Casper; and Kelly Galloway, Durango, Colorado. “All four of those girls will be hard to replace," Schrad said. "They did the things I asked, but they did a lot of little things, too. I attribute how they refined their skills to an eagerness to learn and excel.” Galloway, Fischer and Scheltel made the 1987 all-tournament team. Fischer and Galloway have all-Reglon IX medals in their (Photo by Donna Davis) Wendy Fischer and Jeanette Scheitel were the outside-inside threats for CC trophy cases. And Galloway, an engineering major, will be named to the Academic All­ America team in January. Schrad, though, points to Leithead for “co-MVP” honors on the team. The 5-6 standout solidified the setter position during mid-season. All four sophomores dominated Region IX statistics. Scheltel finished the season with 228 blocks, best in the region. She was also fifth in kills with 3.8 per game. Galloway had the top attack efficience in Region IX (51 percent), and Fischer was fifth in efficiency and sixth in kills (2.8 per game). Leithead was second in assists with 8.1 per game. There were, of course, some bright new spots on the team. Julie Gustafson, Casper; Janet Buckner, Lyman; VaLynne Asay, Bluffdale, Utah; Deena Baca, Tularosa, N.M.; Dawn Johnson, Green River; and Monica Fabian, Green River all played significant roles during the season. One of Schrad's goals when she arrived was to “establish” the CC volleyball program. With more than 60 victories in three seasons, she has done that. She did it, in part, by introducing a comprehensive spring program for her athletes. She spent a great deal of individual time with her sophomores last spring, and it paid off in victories during the fall. Now, the goal is to take one more step. To Nationals. What will it take? “I am looking for some big girls,” Schrad said. “We need a middle hitter, a big setter and a backcourt specialist." That is a tall order. But Schrad said she has received “three times the inquiries" this year over last from prospective athletes. The foundation is laid. All that is needed Is a few building blocks ... Back in 1958, physical science instructor Norm Weis agreed to construct a costume which was appropriate for the Casper College Thunderbirds. He chose an early form of the current Heyoka, taken from the Indian medicine man, who danced and chanted to make the spirits right for his tribe. The Heyoka mascot does that for his T-Birds before each game. The traditional dance is designed to “get the spirits right” for a Casper College victory. Of course, he also helps get the crowd involved. Mr. Weis twice has given Heyoka a facelift, once in 1965 and then in 1986. The current costume consists of genuine mink skin, Indian bead work and leather moccasins. The head is constructed around a football helmet; the beak is made of fiberglass material and the epoxy eyes were hand made by Weis. This year's Heyoka is Dennis Roberson, a sophomore engineering student from Sheridan. Roberson, besides performing at the games, is scheduled to make appearances to local gradeschools in the area to model the mascot. Heyoka has become somewhat of a fixture at the national tournament, just as the T-Birds have. Fans in Hutchinson, Kansas look forward to seeing the T-Bird mascot, which they say is the best at the tournament.
