After all, the great American indoor sport has been an integral part of his life. Growing up in Sunrise and Buffalo, he used to spend hours watching his father. Jack, running his teams through drills. Jack is now a member of the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame, and a respected sage of courtside manner. Pat played for his father, and was an all-stater for the Bison, before leading the first Wyoming All-Star contingent against Montana. He went on to play a year at Northwest Community College in Powell, and two years at Eastern Montana College in Billings. It was very shortly after his playing days that Rafferty was thrust into the coaching ranks. He became a graduate assistant for Dick Edwards at the beginning of the 1980-81 season. In January, Edwards died of a heart attack. Rafferty coached the rest of the year. EMC finished 21-9, made the playoffs for the first time in the school's history, and wound up 17th in the country. In 1981-82, Rafferty assisted Pat Douglas at EMC, before taking assistant jobs at Northern Arizona and later at the University Ipf Idaho. That Division I recruiting experience ns something he brings to his next job­ coaching the Casper College Thunderbirds. Rafferty knows the challenge ahead. All he has to do is coach one of the top 10 junior college programs in the country, fill the shoes of a Hall of Fame Coach—Swede Erickson, and maintain a winning tradition. But then, he wouldn’t be here If the challenge weren't great. “There were only a handful of juco head jobs in the country that I would have considered,” he says. “As far as the community and resources are concerned, and as far as the tradition, this was one of them." And so, just a couple hours down the road from where he played his high school ball. Fans got a preseason look at this year's Thunderbird edition against the alumni squad. While the T-Birds fell 79-76, it was a team that showed discipline and took good shots. It was also a team that showed signs of an outstanding running game. It will not be an easy road for the first-year coach. This is probably the toughest T-Bird schedule in memory. The first eight games are in tournaments, against quality opponents. The only two other games before Christmas are against preseason Region IX favorites Sheridan and Trididad State. “We could be .500 by Christmas time, and still be a good team," Rafferty points out. “This schedule will test our water.” The one ace in the hole for these T-Birds might be depth. Rafferty appears to be 10 or 12 players deep. There are no superstars. But they have potential. “The biggest thing we have to overcome is the transition to a new system,” Rafferty says. “Most coaches have at least a few players who have been in the program. The newness of the program will be an adjustment for everyone.” The area Rafferty says needs improvement is rebounding. If his frontline players can improve and go to the glass, these TBirds might be in the running come March. he has his chance to be a head coach. “I've been waiting for an opportunity like this," he told a press conference the day he was introduced. “I don't have all the answers, but I think I have a sound philosophy and belief about how the game is to be played.” Rafferty says his initial goal is to instill an identity and a philosophy that will “set the tone for the future.” His longterm goal, he adds, is to have a chance to play for the national title. “I hope when others mention my teams, they will say that we play hard, that we play good defense, and that we can adjust to various tempos offensively. It was the finale for one of the best ever in the junior college ranks. And Swede Erickson went out with style. Following a year of memorable standing ovations in places like Miles City and Twin Falls, Erickson nearly snuck up on his peers yet another time—just for old time’s sake. His Thunderbirds earned a berth in the Region IX Final Four, only to lose to eventual champion Trinidad in the semi-finals. The odds finally caught up, according to Erickson. (After all, Jim Toupal had never beaten him in tournament play.) He finished his career at 638 wins and 234 losses (.730 winning percentage), and among the three winningest coaches in National Junior College Athletic Association history. It seemed only fitting, then, that Erickson take over as president of the organization. He did that last summer, and will serve a twoyear term with the NJCAA. B En route to those lofty figures, Erickson coached six All-Americans, Including Flynn Robinson, Bob Lackey and Gerald Mattinson. His teams won 10 Region IX championships. He has that many Coach of the Year plaques in his collection, too. Erickson, who has a gymnasium on campus named in his honor, will also serve H athletic director at Casper College, and he pis made a pledge to be one of the biggest supporters of T-Bird basketball. Erickson is still in the process of moving his memorabilia Into a special display case at Erickson Thunderbird Gym. Fans and friends will be able to view the 10 national trophies, the numerous Coach of the Year plaques (including National Coach of the Year in 1971), and his awards from the National Olympic Committee. Erickson will continue to serve with the USOC in the selection of amateur basketball squads for international competition. Besides all his other duties, Erickson’s new position with Casper College is that of Director of the Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the institution. Erickson is an avid outdoorsman, and spends his leisure time on the banks of the Platte River, searching for that record Brown trout. ' That’s the question that must have crossed Abe Steward's mind several times during the past few months. The Casper College women’s coach had a rookie season that most coaches only dream about—22-5 and a runner-up finish in the Region IX tournament. Make that an overtime, closebut-no-cigar loss to Central Wyoming College in the championship game. You can’t come any closer than Steward’s first Lady T-Bird contingent did to a national tournament. But ask the likeable head coach about the pressure of bettering last year’s finish, and he’ll smile. He has every intention of doing just that. Steward became the CC women’s coach after spending seven seasons as Swede Erickson's assistant coach. Before joining Erickson at Casper College, Steward coached and played basketball in the Brazilian Pro League. That followed a professional basketball career with the Carolina Cougars of the American Basketball Association. Originally from Ohio, he was an All-American under Erickson in 1970-71, and helped the TBirds to a fifth-place finish in the national tournament that year. Many consider Steward to be the finest allaround player ever at Casper College. He quickly showed that he is capable of passing along his knowledge of the game to those who play for him. Steward says his goal is to elevate the Casper College women’s basketball program to the same national prominence as the men's. That is certainly a tall order. After all, Casper College is among the 10 winningest programs in the country in men’s basketball. While Steward lost his front line—which included 6-5 Sheila Hughes and 5-10 Connie Stoner—he is blessed with the return of a backcourt many consider to be the best in Region IX. Sophomores Sheryl Schroefel and Krisser Kiever of Natrona and Serbrina Andrews of Milwaukee promise to make Lady T-Bird basketball exciting again. Steward also welcomes back Shelley Anderson, a 6-3 postman who played two seasons ago. And Debborah Sparks, a transfer, should solidify the power forward spot. “We have several girls who can shoot the ball," Steward says. "The fans might see us shoot some 25 footers this season. And I expect Sparks to be all-region IX before the season is over.” Sparks will be unable to play the first semester because of the NJCAA transfer rule. But her rebounding and shooting ability underneath might make the difference. “I have 11 Wyoming girls on this team, and I feel better about them than I did with last year’s. I think we can be in the hunt-’ All in all, it shoula be a promising sophomore year for Steward. And a promising season for the Lady T-Birds. DURBIN "iv/swes COACH RAFFERTY YEARS OF SUCCESS 10 �The Coaching Staff Jean Wheatley Associate Director of Athletics Jean Wheatley has watched women’s athletics grow from its infancy in Region IX to a competitive level on a national scale. She was primarily responsible for instigating women’s athletics among junior colleges in the region. Her women’s teams first began competition at Casper College in 1972. The CC tennis coach from 1977-1984, her teams won four Region IX championships. Under her guidance, the CC women’s teams have won two conference championships in the last six years. This year, she took over as director of the 4,600-square foot Fitness and Wellness Center. In her 21st year at Casper College, Jean is well known around the region in the field of physical education instruction. She has a husband, Stan. They have two daughters, Georgia and Jennifer, and a son, Greg. Mary Schrad Women’s Volleyball Coach Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach Mary Schrad came to Casper College from Lyman High School, where she coached for three seasons. She directed the Eagles to state all three years, and to a state championship in basketball. In Schrad’s first season at Casper College, the Lady T-Birds finished 20-16, the first time CC had compiled a 20-win season. This year, the T-Birds reversed their fortunes in sub-region (flip-flopping a 2-6 mark to 6-2), and entered Region IX tournament with high hopes. Schrad is a former professional player. She played for the Iowa Cornets of the now­ defunct Women’s Professional Basketball Association, after starring at Briar Cliff College in Iowa. After college, she toured and played in Europe. David Allen Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach David is in his first year as an assistant coach, following a noteworthy career at Casper College and Northern Arizona University. David started two seasons at Casper College, and led his team in 1983 to within a flicker of the national tournament. During his tenure as a player, the T-Birds won 53 games and he was named all-Region IX. He went on to earn several honors for NAU, including the prestigious Scholar Athlete of the Year (for all sports) following his senior season. Last year, Allen played for the Wyoming Wildcatters of the Continental Basketball Association. This year, he joins his former mentor at NAU (Coach Rafferty recruited Allen), to help the new coach with the Thunderbirds. W. J. Wragge Men’s Assistant W. J. is not only a student at the University of Wyoming, but a student of the game. During the day, he substitute teaches in the Casper public schools, and in the evening, the former Casper College student assists Coach Rafferty. A physical education major, Wragge’s desire is to coach someday in the college ranks, and teach. A native of Sheridan, he starred in basketball and football for the Brones in high school. Comes from one of the finest basketball programs in the Needs maturity, but potentially one of the finest T-Birds this year ... averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds for Woodward High last year, which finished in Ohio’s top 18 country - Dunbar High ... his junior and senior year Dunbar was ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the nation, respectively collected 15 points and 5 rebounds as a senior... a player who can really run the court ...
