Sheridan’s Bruce Hoffman pleads his case. By Bill Landen Call it the “Year of the Trojan.’’ That's the consensus among the Region IX coaches. Trinidad State, which brings a sterling 28-1 record and a No. 6 ranking into this year’s event, rates as the odds-on favorite to capture the first-place trophy and a trip to Hutchinson, Kan. in two weeks. If Coach Jim Toupal’s team can pull it off, it would mark the first time ever that the Trojans have gone to Nationals. That's hard to believe when one considers the talent that has played for the southern Colorado school (including Spencer Haywood and Andre Nicholson). Trinidad has played for the Region IX championship only three times, and each time Casper College sent the Trojans home empty handed. Toupal agrees that his team might be one of the favorites, but he’s quick to point toothers. Beginning with him, here's what the coaches say about Region IX; Jim Toupal, Trinidad “It's wide opwn. Having to win four games in a row, almost anyone can emerge. With Swede (Erickson) playing in his final one, you can't count him out at home. Nebraska Western has good talent, and I think Sheridan will be right there.’’ Bruce Hoffman, Sheridan “I think it’s wide open. Trinidad has to ‘Year of the T rojan’ Swede Erickson, Casper “I like Trinidad State and whoever comes out of the north as the top seed.” Dale Neal, York “I haven't seen the teams out there, but judging from the stats it looks like Trinidad. From there it looks pretty balanced. I don’t know if we have the physical teams (in the east) to match up.” John Jourgenson, McCook Coaches favor Trinidad State be the favorite, then after that, seven or eight could win this thing. Whichever team is right for four nights has a chance.” John Morrison, Dawson “Trinidad State. The early season favorite was Nebraska Western, but they haven't been playing as well. I don’t know much about the east, but whoever’s playing well has a chance.” Bin Graefe, Central Wyoming “I would have to clearly say Trinidad, but conversely, there are about eight teams (that could win). I'm not discounting York, because I think they’ve got a good team. It'll be the most wide open I’ve seen in the past four years.” 9 “Trinidad and Nebraska Western, but there’s eight or 10 others who could win it.” There are a lot of theories why most Region IX teams have ridden the roller coaster in 1985-86, but the most prevalent has to do with front-line players. It is a year of fine guards and average big people. Several teams have shown ability to beat almost anyone on a given night— Sheridan, Northwest, Casper, Laramie County—but each has also stumbled against teams it shouldn’t have. The lack of a dominating inside player might be the reason. While tradition rides with Nebraska Western, Sheridan or Casper (particularly with the T-Birds playing at home for the first time in eight years), teams like York, Southeast, Northwest, Dawson and Central Wyoming should also draw close scrutiny to the more-than-casual tournament observer. �Dawson College Good Luck T-Birds and Swede!! Players to Watch: Byrd, LoPour, Morgan, Kraan. 24 ‘Dean’ bids farewell to coaching fraternity There will be a changing of the guard in the Dean’s office this summer. As most every Regon IX basketball fan realizes by now, Casper’s Swede Erickson will step down after the tournament (or after the National Tournament) from coaching basketball. It will mark the end of 28 years of building one of the finest junior college programs in the country here in Casper. During those 28 years, Erickson has never missed a game. And his “Number one right hand,” Artie, has never missed a home game. Both will have other duties beginning this summer, as Erickson assumes duties as Director of the Casper College Foundation. Much has been said and honored about Erickson’s career, but perhaps it was summed up best by George Killian, Director of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Speaking the night of Erickson’s final regular season home game, Killian expressed his appreciation for what the Casper Coach has meant for basketball. The dean of Region IX coaches was asked what his hopes are for the league and its coaches. “I hope they maintain the competitive caliber of basketball that we have come to enjoy in this region,” Erickson said.
