Description An account of the resource Plate 11 from the Castle Garden collection A complex panel of shields and possibly drums. The shield to the extreme left is a chromopetroglyph. Four heads complete the design and a green band was painted across each face. Below it is the figure of a buffalo. The circle to the right of the yard stick contains the figures of two prong horn antelopes. To the right may be seen a man with a spear. The circle to the right of this figure represents two birds, sage or grouse. Above this a shield represents what appears to be the sun symbols. To the right of this is another shield with many inner circles and two feathers at the top right. Below this may be seen a circle containing two weasels, usual sign of a medicine man. To the right of this, the four quarters of the moon is represented. Below this, a shield containing six bear claws radiating from a central circle. The last shield is complex with zig-zag, lightning like lines of a symbolic nature. This is probably the best group of shields to be seen at Castle Gardens. They are beginning to erode badly and the uppermost circle is practically gone. The paint on the one circle is also hard to trace. Description An account of the resource This collection consists of reports on and descriptions of petroglyphs and pictographs created during the New Deal archaeology that happened across Wyoming during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Ted C. Sowers oversaw these reports as Supervisor for the Archaeological Project of the Works Project Administration. Danny N. Walker, PhD, RPA, Wyoming State Archaeologists' Office, writes in a poster presented at the Society for American Archaeology's 76th Annual Meeting, "As with many other WPA projects, the survey closed with the advent of World War II, but provided a basis for future archaeological research" (2011). The Natrona County Public Library held these reports before they were transferred to the Casper College Library's Special Collections. Description An account of the resource Plate 12 from the Castle Garden collection An Anthropomorphic Chromopetroglyph of a warrior on a shield. He is depicted holding two feathered spears. The sandstone is badly cracked, but the surface was smooth before the Indian artists engraved this figure. The colors of the figure are the following: the feathers are white; the face is green and featureless; the neck is purplish-red; the shoulders are orange-yellow; the upper garment is green and the skirt is purlish-red. This is one of the finest figures although the colors are faded. The two zig-zag lines on the shoulders are like those on the Great Turtle. The diameter of the circle is about 16 3/4 inches across.
