We have all become acquainted with 20-win seasons, regional cham­ pionships and trips to the national tournament. The magic of Thunder­ bird basketball that has kept us all content is the “Swede.” He is not only a colorful personality, but he produces colorful teams. The athletes who have been brought to Casper College by Swede have stayed in our memory long after their playing careers. Remember the “hot­ dogs” who were going to show us how basketball is played, only to realize they I—Credits were in a tough league and “Coach” was the one who knew the game? They played it his way, or they didn’t wear a Thunderbird uniform. I plan to enjoy this season with Coach Erickson and the Thunder­ birds. Knowing it is Swede's last few games as coach will only make me cheer louder. I hope you will join me in helping this be the most memorable season Swede has ever had. DURBIN “THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, SWEDE” CONTRACTOR �REGION IX OUTLOOK Warning: Don’t Count Anybody Out It was Satchel Paige who said, “Don’t look back, somebody might be gaining on you.’’ Swede Erickson, Jim Toupal and Bruce Hoffman can attest to it. Casper, Trinidad and Sheridan might be the three most successful teams of Region IX in the 1980s, but the gap between top and bottom has narrowed consider­ ably. Don’t be surprised, then, if there is a brand new face on the gold medal stand in March. “It seems more unpredictable this year,’’ says Dennis Thomas of Western Wyoming, whose program has taken giant strides in two years. “Last year, you knew Casper, Sheridan and Trinidad as usual would be there. This year, I don’t think you can say that.” Thomas watched his Spartans reach the semi-finals of the tournament before bowing out. That momentum carried over into a recruiting class that was “not too bad,’’ according to Thomas. However, with no returning starters, his youngsters will have to come a long way. Watch for Fred Rollin, a 6-3 guard. Laramie County, the surprising opposite to Casper in the finals last year, appears to be one of the favorites again. But Woody Halverson will have to overcome some early-season adversity. Joe Hamilton, the 6-4 alleverything for the Golden Eagles last year, signed with Southern Illinois. And Emmit Taylor, his counterpart on the frontline, has suffered through two preseason ankle injuries. Still, Rodney Tapp returns, and Ron Tate, a team­ mate of Hamilton’s from Carbondale, III., figure to put LCCC in the thick. Central Wyoming may not look like a threat on paper, but Coach Bin Graefe has two of the best guards to come out of Wyoming in years. Robert Johnson and Randy Wynn combined for 53 points in their opener, and with point production like that, the Rustlers will be a threat. Johnson, out of Lew Roney’s Cheyenne Central program, is one of the best off-guards in the region, and may sign Divi­ sion I next spring. Coach Ken Rochlitz returns three quality in-state sophomores in Craig Young, Bryan Humphrey and Randy Taylor. Hoffman likes his team, but he looks south for his predictions. “The preseason scouts liked Casper’s talent a lot,’’ he said, “But I think LCCC has to be the odds-on favorite." Outside Wyoming, Trinidad State and Northeastern are probably the front-runners. McCook looks to field its best team in years, and Southeast (Neb.) is always the class of the east sub-region. Nebraska Western might figure, too. The Cougars have a new coach in Mark Nixon. Nixon spent four seasons at Amarillo, Texas, where he compiled a 102-29 mark. He’s excited about the new challenge. “We were ranked in the top 10 three out of four years down there (Texas),’’ Nixon says, “but nobody cared. Up here, we’re just trying to survive, and people are inter­ ested. This is a great place to coach." Positive vibes. (307) 266-3500 When EF Hutton talks, people listen. �LOOKING BACK T-Birds Played Cinderella; Won Region IX Title In '85 There are a lot of reasons why the 1984-85 basketball season will hold a special place in the hearts of Casper College fans. It was a season packed with memories - a Hall of Fame induction for Coach Swede Erickson, a Region IX championship, another trip to the national tournament, and Erickson's6CX)th victory. But most important, 1985 will be remembered because of a special group of young­ sters; a basketball team which had something to prove. Written off as just another 20-win team, the 1985 T-Birds put Erickson on their shoulders and didn't let him down until he had direct­ ed them to the national tour­ nament. It was the kind of story that sportswriters love. The Casper College roster was loaded with sophomores at the beginning of the 1984-85 campaign - names like Herb Clark, Ray Petrie and Peter Lock. That was the good news. The bad news was that most were the same players who had "struggled" through a 17-9 season the year before, Erickson's worst in 16 years. Most all the prognosticat­ ors envisioned success, but frankly, no chance for a Region IX championship. The T-Birds got off to a quick 7-0 start, including a championship in their Thanksgiving Classic tourna­ ment (94-60 over Northwest CC). Their first loss of the year came to Snow College (Utah), 61-60 on the road. The Birds proved their resil­ iency by downing Trinidad three nights later by the same score. December and January took the T-Birds on a gruel­ ing series of road trips. They lost to Western Wyoming, Colby, Kansas, Laramie County and Trinidad (all on the road), and at the end of January they stood at 14-7, .750. Not bad, but not good enough to write home about. Also, the T-Birds had lost three in a row. The swoon earned much notoriety, too, since all three had been chances for Erickson to gain his 600th victory. The Tony Gulley burned the nets in '85. Little did they know at the time, but they would not lose again until March 21. They went on a tear during the month of February, and took a nine-game winning streak into the Region IX tourna­ ment. The streak included an unlikely come-from-behind victory over Sheridan, then ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams. The Birds had trailed by 16 points, but came back to win. “I think that game more than any other proved something to our guys," Erickson remembers. The T-Birds wound up with the worst seed in the regional tournament, faced with beating NJC (the host team), Sheridan, Trinidad State and Laramie County for a berth in the national tournament. Tony Gulley scored 26 points, and Sean Smith add­ ed 12. as Casper defeated Trinidad in the semifinals. Gulley, probably one of the purest shooters ever to wear a T-Bird uniform, scored another 24 points in a 102-80 rout over Laramie County the following night. A victory over Worthing­ ton, Minn. (81-50) in a playoff at Erickson Gym cinched the trip to Hutchinson, Kansas. The T-Birds lost in the first round to eventual national champion Dixie College (Utah), 74-61. There were no tears. Only handshakes, a smile, and a pat on the head from a veteran coach. It had been a grand season. �Fellow Faculty and Staff Say Thanks, Coach, For A Job Well Done! �Heyoka Carries On Tradition Jim Engle says he loves kids. And he loves to entertain them. That’s why the 19-year-old sopho­ more should fit right in to one of Casper College's longest traditions. Engle is this year's Heyoka, the Thunderbird whose dance has brought forth victories for the past 20 years. “I love to look at their faces when I gain their trust,” says Engle, who used to be the mascot for his native Upton High School. "It was kind of a whim that made me try out.” Engle is a pre-vet major at Casper College. He hopes to transfer to Colorado State University, then someday return to his native state to practice animal medicine. The Heyoka costume Engle will wear was designed by physical science instructor Norm Weis. Weis first built the Heyoka 25 years ago, “in an effort to bring about more school spirit.” This is the third costume since then. It took Weis nearly eight weeks to complete the bird. The rabbit fur surrounds a football helmet, and the beak is made from fiberglass. Weis even constructed the eyes. The le^ings are genuine mink fur. The wings are especially impressive, since each feather has a specially sewn socket in which to rest. The Heyoka is recognized as one of the finest mascots anywhere, includ­ ing major colleges. He has performed nine times in front of the national tournament audience. Engle says he vyould love to have that chance. The athletes who have been brought to Casper College by Swede have stayed in our memory long after their playing careers. Remember the “hot­ dogs” who were going to show us how basketball is played, only to realize they were in a tough league and “Coach” was the one who knew the game? Problem is, folks can get awfully confortable with excellence. Erickson announced his retirement — effective at the end of the current basketball season — in September. He will become Director of the Casper College Foundation, the fundraising arm of the institution. He promises to approach his new position with the same gusto as he has basketball coaching. Can you imagine 600 new buildings on campus? Entering his final season, Erickson is the fourth winningest coach in national Junior College Athletic Association history. In his 26 seasons, he has compiled an enviable 615-223 record (.734). He trails only Richard Baldwin, Broome County, N.Y., among active coaches. Erickson is coming off one of his most satisfying seasons as a head coach. It's always fun playing Cinderella, especially since Casper College seldom has that luxury. The Thunderbirds were expected to be competitive, and a contender, maybe. By regional tournament time, the Birds were 25-7, but there were only 15 people — Erickson included — who thought Casper had any hope of winning the region. Problem was, a coin flip had given CC the worst seed of any team in the tournament. Four days later, Herb Clark, Tony Gulley and Peter Lock celebrated the title skeptics said they couldn’t have. They had given Erickson his ninth Region IX championship and another trip to Hutchinson, Kan. and the national tournament. The Thunderbirds wound up 14th in the nation, anticlimatic when one considers what happened along the way. On Feb. 1, Casper had squeaked by rival Northeastern, 63-62, giving Erickson his 600th victory, it was quite a celebration at Erickson Thunderbird Gymnasium. All told, only 14 other men have coached 600 victories. Among them are some of the biggest names in the sport, including Adolph Rupp, Phog Allen, John Wooden and Henry Iba. Needless to say, it will be difficult for Erickson to provide an encore (or, as he likes to say, “earn that much ink again”) even if this is his swan song. Erickson has a lot of things to reflect upon: his all-Americans, his milestones, his fans and his booster club. He can perhaps take the most pride in one thing: the quality of basketball, both in Wyoming and in the region, are better because of him. Other programs have always had to scramble to keep up. There is one piece of unfinished business. The one goal which has eluded Erickson has been the national title. At least three of his teams had golden opportunities (they were led by such notable players as Flynn Robinson, Bob Lackey and Abe Steward, and Gerald Mattinson). Still, his highest finish was second place. The fourth win­ ningest coach in the history of the National Junior College Athletic Association, with a 615-223 record Enckson has done more than just post victories. He is a member of the Amateur Basketball Association -U.S.A, board, and has served as a voting delegate to the United States Olympic Committee for 12 years. Last year, he was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame, and named Coach of the Year at the Region IX tournament. His influence and respect among peers reaches from coast to coast. He is one of the most lar coaches in the NJCAA. The list of players he has sent on to Division I and the pros reads like a iuco Who s Who. Erickson is an avid outdoorsman - a better fisherman (he says) than Bobby Knight - and a devoted family man. His wife Artie has not missed a home game in 26 years. Swede and Artie have two sons, Kent and Brent. Abe Steward Women's Basketball Coach Assistant Men’s Coach After spending six years as assistant coach to Swede Erickson. Steward opted to double his load. Last April, Steward became the school's sixth women's basketball coach. He takes over a program that has struggled for the past four years, but optimism is a personality trait of the former Thunderbird player. Steward immediately hit the recruiting trail last spring, and landed some highly-sought-after athletes including two local all-staters in Sheryl Schroefel and Krisser Kiever. He is dedicated to the task of elevating Lady T-Bird basketball to a nationally-competitive level, and earning the respect of local fans. Before joining Erickson at Casper College, Steward coached and played basketball in the Brazilian pro league Before that, he played professional basketball for the Carolina Cougars of the ABA. Originally from Ohio, he was an All-American under Erickson in 1970-71, and helped the T-Birds to a fifth-place finish at nationals his sophomore season. Steward has a wife, Arlene, and a son. Trei. Jean Wheatley Associate Director of Athletics Jean Wheatley has watched women's athletics grow from its infancy in Region IX to a competitive level on the national scale. She was primarily responsible for instigating women’s athletics among junior colleges in the region. Her women’s teams first began competition at Casper College in 1972. The CC tennis coach from 1977-1984. her teams won four Region IX championships. Under her guidance, the CC women's teams have won two conference championships in the last six years. Jean, in her 20th year at Casper Col­ lege, is a leader in the physical education instruction field. She has a husband, Stan. They have two daughters. Georgia and Jennifer, and a son, Greg. Today the tradition of academic excellence continues. Casper College is located in Casper, Wyoming — the state’s largest city and the hub of the state. [ Brent Langlois Laura Butler ��How High Will These Birds Fly? A big word-potential, but Erickson likes it! It's a two-year cycle in junior college basketball. That doesn't leave much time for turnaround. It goes without saying that veteran ball clubs generally wind up in Hutchinson, Kan. Such was the case with the Casper College Thunderbirds in 1985. Only three familiar faces dot the lineup from that team — Andy Jones, Leve Latson and Sean Smith. That might normally be enough returnees to solidify a lineup, but none of the three played that much a year ago. Coach Swede Erickson is faced with several challenges for 1985-86. First, how do you replace the offensive point production of Tony Gulley, who averaged nearly 22 points per game? Second, how do you compen­ sate for the two big sophomores — Rick Domonkos and Herb Clark — who are no longer around to clog the lanes? The answers aren’t simple. Erickson will be counting heavily on his three sophomores. Jones, an academic All-America candidate, had a great preseason. He scored 21 points in the cham­ pionship of the Thanskgiving Classic, and the T-Birds will need that kind of production out of him to be successful. Erickson has experimented with Jones at the point, but the Wheatland product is more comfortable at the number two position, driving the baseline. Smith has moved further outside this year. The 6-5 forward has not, however, been entirely comfortable. Through the first seven games, he was averaging only four rebounds per game. But his point production had picked up. If he can rebound along with his 15 points per game, the T-Birds will be solid at the small forward. How the T-Birds develop depends largely upon how Smith develops. Latson. possibly the quickest jumper on the team, has as much potential as anyone. At 6-6, he will be called upon to fill the big shoes of Domonkos. Three newcomers have already proven that they will be critical elements in the T-Bird fortunes. Charles Robert­ son, a 6-6 center-forward from Casper Natrona, averaged 6 rebounds per game during the preseason. If he can keep a bad back healthy, he could be the biggest surprise of the year. Erickson calls freshman Barry Jackson “potentially one of the best point guards this school has ever had.'' Jackson has to mature, of course. He has shown the ability to hit from outside, and that’s important because of the prevalent zone defense in Region IX. The third newcomer who has seen a lot of playing time is Clifford Wiggins, a 6-4 transfer from New Mexico Military. Wiggins' board strength and defensive ability must continue to improve, but he has the chance to be a great one before the year is over. Ron Eastman has been backing up Jackson at the point guard position, and has shown great progress. The guard position has probably been the young team's Archilies Heal, however. Eastman likes to look for the assists inside, and that alone will earn him a lot of playing time. The other guards are Chris Davis and Jerry Yutesler. Davis, a freshman from Washington, D.C., got a late start, and had yet to earn confidence in preseason. He has the ability to score from the outside, though and has great quickness. Yutesler, who played his high school ball at Natrona, is also a great shooter, and simply needs playing time to improve. Tony Dave is an outstanding prospect at forward. At 6-4 and a great leaper, Dave has caught Erickson’s eye. �He might only be a freshman, but Charles Robertson is ready for war in '86. Casper's No. 1 fan — Swede's wife Artie — cheers 'em on! Just how far this team goes depends on its ability to improve. The potential, Erickson says, is there. He ought to know — only once in the last 20 years has his team fail­ ed to win 20 games. But one more thing. The Region IX tournament is at Erickson Thunder­ bird Gymnasium in March. DURBIN "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, SWEDE" �REGION IX OUTLOOK Warning: Don’t Count Anybody Out It was Satchel Paige who said, “Don’t look back, somebody might be gaining on you." Swede Erickson, Jim Toupal and Bruce Hoffman can attest to it. Casper, Trinidad and Sheridan might be the three most successful teams of Region IX in the 1980s, but the gap between top and bottom has narrowed consider­ ably. Don’t be surprised, then, if there is a brand new face on the gold medal stand in March. “It seems more unpredictable this year,” says Dennis Thomas of Western Wyoming, whose program has taken giant strides in two years. “Last year, you knew Casper, Sheridan and Trinidad as usual would be there. This year, I don't think you can say that.” Thomas watched his Spartans reach the semi-finals of the tournament before bowing out. That momentum carried over into a recruiting class that was “not too bad,” according to Thomas. However, with no returning starters, his youngsters will have to come a long way. Watch for Fred Rollin, a 6-3 guard. Laramie County, the surprising opposite to Casper in the finals last year, appears to be one of the favorites again. But Woody Halverson will have to overcome some early-season adversity. Joe Hamilton, the 6-4 alleverything for the Golden Eagles last year, signed with Southern Illinois. And Emmit Taylor, his counterpart on the frontline, has suffered through two preseason ankle injuries. Still, Rodney Tapp returns, and Ron Tate, a team­ mate of Hamilton’s from Carbondale, III., figure to put LCCC in the thick. Central Wyoming may not look like a threat on paper, but Coach Bin Graefe has two of the best guards to come out of Wyoming in years. Robert Johnson and Randy Wynn combined for 53 points in their opener, and with point production like that, the Rustlers will be a threat. Johnson, out of Lew Roney's Cheyenne Central program, is one of the best off-guards in the region, and may sign Divi­ sion I next spring. Sheridan's Mark Anderson The sleeper in the Rick Sorenson photo Wyoming Conference might be Northwest Community College. Coach Ken Rochlitz returns three quality in-state sophomores in Craig Young, Bryan Humphrey and Randy Taylor. But the player to watch for the Trappers is James Farr, a 6-1 point guard out of Carmel High School in Chicago — possibly the best From start to finish printing. �point guard ever at NWCC, Rochlitz says. But as always, when talking about Region IX, Sheridan and Casper College should figure. Bruce Hoffman, who has been in the finals two of the last three years, has a wealth of young talent. The consensus seems to be that this Generals team won't be as strong as last year's, which rose to No. 1 in the national rankings in 1985. Howard Brown, 6-5 from Raleigh, N.C., is a fine player, as is Allen Malbrough, 6-8 from Palisades, Calif. Hoffman likes his team, but he looks south for his predictions. “The preseason scouts liked Casper's talent a lot," he said, “But I think LCCC has to be the odds-on favorite.” Outside Wyoming, Trinidad State and Northeastern are probably the front-runners. McCook looks to field its best team in years, and Southeast (Neb.) is always the class of the east sub-region. Nebraska Western might figure, too. The Cougars have a new coach in Mark Nixon. Nixon spent four seasons at Amarillo, Texas, where he compiled a 102-29 mark. He's excited about the new challenge. “We were ranked in the top 10 three out of four years down there (Texas),” Nixon says, “but nobody cared. Up here, we're just trying to survive, and people are inter­ ested. This is a great place to coach.” Positive vibes. That's just what the rest of the region didn’t want to hear out of Scottsbluff, Neb. It was a season packed with memories - a Hall of Fame induction for Coach Swede Erickson, a Region IX championship, another trip to the national tournament, and Erickson's 600th victory. But most important, 1985 will be remembered because of a special group of young­ sters; a basketball team which had something to prove. Written off as just another 20-win team, the 1985 T-Birds put Erickson on their shoulders and didn’t let him down until he had direct­ ed them to the national tour­ nament. It was the kind of story that sportswriters love. The Casper College roster was loaded with sophomores at the beginning of the 1984-85 campaign - names like Herb Clark, Ray Petrie and Peter Lock. That was the good news. The bad news was that most were the same players who had “struggled" through a 17-9 season the year before, Erickson's worst in 16 years. Most all the prognosticat­ ors envisioned success, but frankly, no chance for a Region IX championship. The T-Birds got off to a quick 7-0 start, including a championship in their Thanksgiving Classic tourna­ ment (94-60 over Northwest CC). Their first loss of the year came to Snow College (Utah), 61-60 on the road. The Birds proved their resil­ iency by downing Trinidad three nights later by the same score. December and January took the T-Birds on a gruel­ ing series of road trips. They lost to Western Wyoming, Colby, Kansas, Laramie County and Trinidad (all on the road), and at the end of January they stood at 14-7, .750. Not bad, but not good enough to write home about. Also, the T-Birds had lost three in a row. The swoon earned much notoriety, too, since all three had been chances for Erickson to gain his 600th victory. The Tony Gulley burned the nets in '85. Little did they know at the time, but they would not lose again until March 21. They went on a tear during the month of February, and took a nine-game winning streak into the Region IX tourna­ ment. The streak included an unlikely come-from-behind victory over Sheridan, then ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams. The Birds had trailed by 16 points, but came back to win. "I think that game more than any other proved something to our guys,” Erickson remembers. The T-Birds wound up with the worst seed in the regional toumament, faced with beating NJC (the host team), Sheridan, Trinidad State and Laramie County for a berth in the national tournament. Tony Gulley scored 26 points, and Sean Smith add­ ed 12, as Casper defeated Trinidad in the semifinals. Gulley, probably one of the purest shooters ever to wear a T-Bird uniform, scored another 24 points in a 102-80 rout over Laramie County the following night. A victory over Worthing­ ton, Minn. (81-50) in a playoff at Erickson Gym cinched the trip to Hutchinson, Kansas. The T-Birds lost in the first round to eventual national champion Dixie College (Utah), 74-61. There were no tears. He wants the Lady T-Birds to be entertaining to their fans. Steward, who doubles as men's assistant coach for Swede Erickson, is faced with rebuilding a program that finished last year at 6-20. But a strong recruiting class and a new attitude should help turn things around, he says. The Lady T-Birds’ leading scorer, Linda Jackson of Glenrock, returns. Jackson, a 5-7 guard, finished second in the nation in free throw percentage last year, and led the team in scoring with 18.5 per game. Two other returnees — 6-3 Shelley Anderson and 6-5 Sheila Hughes — give the Lady T-Birds high hopes. Steward said the early practices were a time of “teaching." But he says the team is ready now to begin the wars. Steward says he has been pleased with the three Casper Natrona products. Sheryl Schroefel, a 5-6 all­ stater, Krisser Kiever and transfer Connie Stoner, should all figure prominently in the fortunes this winter. Stoner, a standout for the CC rodeo team as well, was an all-stater two years ago for NC, before enrolling at Eastern Wyo­ ming. Hughes is another returning starter. The 6-5 center from Milwaukee, Wise, is obviously drawing attention from several major colleges. Sabrina Henrie, Shoshoni, saw starting time last year, and has probably been the most im­ pressive in preseason practices, according to her coach. Steward said his team is already developing a per­ sonality. “It will be a team that gets up and down the court,” he said. “We don’t walk it up. It should be exciting for the fans." Steward has set a goal in his first season. No Casper College team has won more than 15 regular season games in one season. If the Lady T-Birds can do that, post-season play will take care of itself. And he loves to entertain them. That's why the 19-year-old sopho­ more should fit right in to one of Casper College’s longest traditions. Engle is this year's Heyoka, the Thunderbird whose dance has brought forth victories for the past 20 years. “I love to look at their faces when I gain their trust," says Engle, who used to be the mascot for his native Upton High School. "It was kind of a whim that made me try out." Engle is a pre-vet major at Casper College. He hopes to transfer to Colorado State University, then someday return to his native state to practice animal medicine. The Heyoka costume Engle will wear was designed by physical science instructor Norm Weis. Weis first built the Heyoka 25 years ago, "in an effort to bring about more Donna Davis photo school spirit.” This is the third costume since then. It took Weis nearly eight weeks to complete the bird. The rabbit fur surrounds a football helmet, and the beak is made from fiberglass. Weis even constructed the eyes. The leggings are genuine mink fur. The wings are especially impressive. since each feather has a specially sewn socket in which to rest. The Heyoka is recognized as one of the finest mascots anywhere, includ­ ing major colleges. He has performed nine times in front of the national tournament audience. Engle says he would love to have that chance. Aley The Thunderbird Thanksgiving Classic has become a tradition on a par with the great pre-holiday tournaments throughout America. The competition has been uniformly strong and community response has been eminently praiseworthy. As a regional sports spectacle, the Classic has generated tremendous appeal for basketball fans in Casper and the surrounding area; I join them in anticipation of this year’s contest. Much of the success of the Thunderbird Classic can be attributed to the loyal and dedicated support of the T-Bird Boosters. The significant contribution of the Boosters is such that we can afford a competitive basketball program without utilizing institutional resources. Interaction between the Boosters and Casper College again testifies to the highly cooperative attitude prevailing between the community and the school. Surely, if this institution has achieved any degree of preeminence in the field of inter-school competition, it has been because of a partnership between the institution and its community patrons. In any contest someone will win and someone must lose. While everyone likes to stand in the winner’s circle, the mere amassing of more points on the scoreboard is probably secondary. The residual benefits that accrue to the participating athlete are much deeper and longer lasting. There are far too many folk in our society that have not learned the value of team effort as opposed to individual performance. Indeed, too many that have not learned how to lose gracefully or that have not realized that "competitorship” is manifestly more important than "winnership.” We feel that our basketball program is demanding and requires both team and individual discipline.
