He stopped at a farm auction off the side of the road. He walked up to a chest of drawers. He pulled on each knob as a kind of test. Inside of drawer five he found a stack of photographs. Children in plastic pools, swimming on the lawns outside of suburban houses. Couples embracing under the branches of trees on the night of the high school prom. Faces unmoving. Time in a coma. “Who are they?” he wondered, “Are they gone now? Are they old people?” He placed the high bid. Then he brought the chest home with the family inside. Now they belong to him.
