Before they hauled it off she nailed it to the front of her three bedroom house. By the end of April, it had faded from green to tan. In May the wreath moved past tan into a hostile shade of orange. By the time July arrived, they figured out the wreath was meant to mock the neighborhood. It mocked suburbia. That fucking wreath mocked the entire middle class. At a block party, on Labor Day, people were heard noting that crows and magpies kept a vigil in Karen’s yard. A boy said that he saw Karen, perched on a phone wire, in a row of mocking birds.
