40th year of E’s reign—Essex refuses to come to celeb[ration]
Donne with fleet in ’97—Azores
’97—Lord Howard (not Es) is named Lord Admiral + now named Earl of Nottingham + Essex compensated as Earl Marshall
’97—Essex tries to arrange marr. bet. Lady Hatton + Bacon; Coke wins
1597—Sept-Azores [illegible] by Essex (Ral. quarrel)—treas. loss (seizure of cochineal [a dye derived from insects]) makes for loss of real treas. ships
Donne served under Lord Tho. Howard in Azore
